As part of the 7th grade Science class the students engage in critical thinking essays dealing with current events scientific issues where they take a stance and support their beliefs with evidence from literature and multimedia research. The students are also engage to use their creativity in creating a 3D model of a plant cell with all the corresponding structures labeled and explained. The students use a variety of ways to express their understanding of the material with many forms i.e. comic books, models drawings, stories and plays. The students are taught to thinks outside the box and come up with unique ideas to show their understanding and be life long learners.

My school homework and information page is through TeacherWeb.

My typical 7th grade year at a glance:
1. 3D DNA models made with candy to engage students to learn their nitrogen bases.
2. Protein synthesis comic book explaining the entire process.
3. 3D Plant cell model with all the labels and realistic structures.
4. Genetic Baby Project- students work in pairs to randomly give a certain amount of genetic traits to a child illustrating how genes are given from both mother and father followed by a drawing showing those traits.
5. Persuasive essay using the issue of genetic engineering and the movie GATTACA.
6. Earth history brochures depicting an era other their interest to try to entice people to come and visit this time in history.
7. Hands on labs illustrating the dynamics of natural selection using camouflage and beak variation.
8. Animal adaptation project where student create an original animal to survive in a given environment using a variety of features borrowing from different animals.
9. Chicken wing dissection to study the bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons along the movement dynamics.
10. Students create an original play explaining the process a virus gets eliminated from the cell.
11. “A day at McDonalds™” A take-out food study looking at how many calories could be ingested if you had three square meals at McDonalds™ vs three meals at a healthier alternative like subway.™
12. Critical thinking using a variety of speaker invited to class to address issues like sexual education, infectious diseases like AIDS, and sexual harassment.
Just a taste of a year at Mr. Alvarez’s 7th grade Science/health class.
